Vitamins B12, B6, B1 and Glucosamine

All B vitamins help the body to convert carbohydrates into glucose (sugar), which is "burned" to produce energy. B vitamins are also essential in the breakdown of fats and protein. B vitamins play an important role in maintaining muscle tone lining the digestive tract and promoting the health of the nervous system, skin, hair, eyes, mouth, and liver.

B6 (Pyridoxine) $10: Has been shown to benefit cardiovascular function, learning disorders, and skin concerns. It also is used to balance the mood as it is needed in the formation of serotonin, dopamine and other neurotransmitters. Known as the "anti-stress" vitamin, it is believed to enhance the activity of the immune system and improve the body's ability to withstand stressful conditions. It also is responsible for metabolism and blood synthesis. May be helpful for arthritis, PMS, Parkinson's, autism, ADD, weight loss, and to prevent fatigue. Men can do this injection up to three times a week due to its water soluble properties. For women, it is especially indicated do this injection around the menstrual cycle or during PMS symptoms.

B12 (Methylcobalamin) $30: This form of vitamin B12 passes the blood-brain barrier and affects brain function directly. It is superior as it does not contain a preservative, and provides the best absorption. It is typically not offered at MD offices. It not only offers the same benefits as the other form of B12 (Cyanocobalimin), but is also recommended for autism, chemical sensitivities, mental health concerns such as depression, stress, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis. It can also helps pregnant or nursing women with nausea and morning sickness.

B12 (Cyanocobalamin) $20: This form of vitamin B12 is the same form used by any MD in practice. May give you energy, weight loss & higher metabolism, deeper sleep, lowered homocysteine (cholesterol) levels, better mood, balanced immune system, mental clarity, anemia, and stamina. Helpful for shingles, neuropathy, and hangovers. Used for -- vegetarians/vegans, those on medications that deplete B12 (Dr. Austin can tell you which ones these are), digestive concerns such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, IBS, colon surgeries, GERD. Also, helpful for fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetics and those with migraines.

B1 (Thiamin) $10: Like other B complex vitamins, thiamine is considered an "anti-stress" vitamin because it may strengthen the immune system and improve the body's ability to withstand stressful conditions. It is named B1 because it was the first B vitamin discovered. Thiamine deficiency is rare, but can occur in people who get most of their calories from sugar or alcohol. People with thiamine deficiency have difficulty digesting carbohydrates. As a result, a substance called pyruvic acid builds up in their bloodstream, causing a loss of mental alertness, difficulty breathing, and heart damage (a disease known as beriberi). Some preliminary evidence suggests that thiamine -- along with other nutrients -- may lower risk of getting cataracts.

Glucosamine $25: Glucosamine is a sugar produced in the body. It is best known for preventing and reversing joint damage related to osteoarthritis. It plays a very important role in maintaining cartilage in the body, the gel-like material that cushions joints, and is found to speed the healing of soft tissue injuries as well.

Although some foods contain small amounts of Glucosamine, there is no readily available source. As a result, supplements in the form of tablets, capsules, creams and injections have become widely available. Injections are recommended because they ensure maximum absorption. Some of Glucosamine’s uses include:

Results will take anywhere from two to eight weeks. Glucosamine's effectiveness may be improved by taking it along with an oral supplement such as chondroitin sulfate, another compound that may affect cartilage. Glucosamine supplements can safely be combined with conventional pain relievers such as acetaminophen and aspirin.

Folate (Folic Acid) $5: Folic Acid is essential for several bodily functions -- the production of healthy red blood cells, for example. Leafy vegetables are a principal dietary source, although most of us get it primarily from fortified cereals and bread. Sufficient folic acid intake is critical for pregnant women to prevent neural tube defects in developing embryos. It is also essential for ensuring fertility. Furthermore, it can relieve hot flashes in postmenopausal women, and may also be helpful in preventing heart disease.
